Glossary

Terms this documentation uses in a specific sense.

Blend : Chamfer or fillet, collectively. See blends.

Body : One solid the document builds. A base sketch from New body starts a body of its own; sketches on a face belong to whatever they stand on. The Bodies panel lists them, names, paints, hides and deletes them, and booleans one against another. See the document model.

Combine : A boolean between two whole bodies: join, cut, or keep only what they share. The body you combine with is consumed.

Chain : A blend reach that continues through every tangent junction and stops at the first corner.

Chamfer : A flat face cut across an edge. Its size is the setback along each of the two faces.

Closed profile : A loop of curves that encloses an area. Only closed profiles extrude. See profiles.

Constraint : A statement that must stay true, such as two lines being parallel. See constraints.

Dimension : A constraint that carries an editable number: Distance, Distance to line, Angle, Radius, Diameter. These make the part parametric.

Docket : The Constraints section of the sidebar. One row per constraint, with its state and its value. See the constraint docket.

DOF : Degrees of freedom. How many independent ways the sketch can still move. Zero means fully constrained. See constraints and freedom.

Document : Everything in the current session: an ordered list of sketches, their extrudes, and the blends on top. Saved as one file.

Document tree : The panel on the left: one collapsible group per kind of thing the document holds (Bodies, Sketches, Planes, Measurements, Parameters, Joints). See the document tree.

Feature : One sketch together with its extrude. The unit the timeline lists and the unit the solid is built from.

Fillet : A rounded edge. Its size is the radius.

Fully constrained : A sketch with no degrees of freedom left. The goal state, because such a sketch can only change when you change a number.

Loop : A blend reach that takes the entire loop an edge belongs to, corners included. Also, in the profile sense, one closed ring of curves.

Midplane : An extrude that straddles its sketch plane, half the distance each way. Ignored for cuts.

Part : The individual solid one feature produces on its own, shown in the model view with its own colour. Parts are reference geometry; what you export is the single combined solid.

Profile : See closed profile.

Reach : How far an edge blend spreads from the edge you picked: Edge, Chain, or Loop.

Redundant : A constraint that is satisfied but was already forced by others. Harmless, and shown amber in the docket.

Reference geometry : Locked geometry you can constrain against but not edit. Produced by projecting a parent sketch onto a face sketch's plane.

Rim : The outer boundary of a face. A rim blend takes all of it in one pass, so the corners mitre properly. Holes through the face keep their own rims.

Round : A circle or an arc, where a constraint accepts either.

Select mode : All, Vertex, Edge, or Face. Narrows what a click may pick, in both views. Keys 1 to 4.

Sidebar : The panel on the right: what is picked, what is holding the sketch you are in, what it has traced, and the timeline. What you are doing, as against the document tree's what you have.

Sketch : Flat geometry on a plane, plus its constraints. Either on the world plane or on a face of the solid.

Snap : Placement landing on an existing point within 12 screen pixels, so the geometry shares that point. Distinct from grid snap.

Solid : The single three-dimensional shape the whole document builds to. Exactly one per document.

Stale model : The solid left on screen after a rebuild fails: the last one that built, which the document no longer describes. Ghosted, and it takes no picks until the document builds again. See the timeline.

Stale reference : A face sketch whose face has gone or is no longer flat. Reported in the timeline in amber, and repaired with the link button on that row. See face references.
